TURKEY: FEAR OF TORTURE / Continued abuse of conscientious objector Mehmet Tarhan
War Resisters' International continues to receive news about mistreatment of Turkish conscientious objector Mehmet Tarhan. According to information received today, Mehmet Tarhan's hair is being cut by force, and he is not allowed to see his lawyers. Turkish groups see this treatment as a punishment for the publication of the abuse he received in prison since his arrest.
War Resisters' International renews its call for letters of protest to the Turkish President, Ahmet Necdet Sezer, email cumhurbaskanligi@tccb.gov.tr. A protest email can be sent at http://wri-irg.org/co/alerts/20050524a.html.
War Resisters' International also asks you to contact your MEP (for people living in the European Union) and to ask them to act on behalf of Mehmet Tarhan, and to raise the issue in negotiations with Turkey about its accession to the European Union.
War Resisters' International appeals to international organisations to pressure Turkey to ensure the safety of Mehmet Tarhan.
