Phishing scam claiming to be Chair of WRI

en

Over the last few days, we have been alerted to a large number of emails from someone claiming to be the Chair of WRI. The email claims another member of WRI is in trouble at an airport, and asks for money to help. People in various countries have also been contacted on the phone.

It's a "phishing" scam - someone has collected information from the WRI website (and then affiliated organisations websites), and used that information to try and trick people into sending money to them.

It's quite sophisticated and very personalised, but we don't think it's because our systems or databases have been hacked. The information in the email, apart from the names, is actually quite inaccurate.

Also, all of the contact information they have used is publicly available on various websites (not just ours) - we're yet to be alerted to contact being made where that persons details weren't available on our website or the website of an affiliate. If you don't think this is the case for you and you have been contacted, please get in touch.

The emails are not from a WRI email account, nor one that our Chair has ever used, and it doesn't appear any of our systems have been hacked. This of course doesn't stop it being extremely annoying and upsetting for people when they receive these phone calls and emails, and we are looking into how we can make them stop.

If you recieve these emails or phone calls, please ignore them. They are entirely fabricated, and have nothing to do with War Resisters' International or any of our affiliates.

If you have any concerns related to this issue, please contact us at info@wri-irg.org
