War Resisters' International (WRI) is committed to maintaining all personal data that we process in a secure manner, in line with current legislation.

What data do we collect, who has access it, and how do we use it?

Through our website, we collect some personal details from those who have opted in to receiving our newsletters. These are a persons' name, email address, and postal address (if they choose to supply this to receive our regular mailouts), and their choice of newsletter. We also use third-party providers (PayPal and GoCardless) to process donations and shop payments. We store email addresses and postal addresses on separate databases held on secure servers, accessible to WRI staff members.

We use an outside firm to deliver our postal appeal, normally sent once a year. We do not share any data with this company in a digital format (once the envelopes have left their site, normally on the day or the day after we have delivered them), and they hold no record of our supporters. We do not share any other contact data without consent with any other company or organisation, for any reason.

Collecting data on WRI members for participation in events

Those who have signed up to attend our events might have supplied us with more information e.g. date of birth, passport information (if we have booked flights on your behalf). We'll keep this information on a secure server, accessible to WRI staff, until the event has finished and we have completed all related administration, such as reporting to funders. Then we delete it.

Financial data security

We use a number of providers to process credit and debit card donations made on the WRI website, called PayPal and GoCardless – the padlock symbol in the address bar of your web browser indicates that the site is secure.

Photos and video footage

Sometimes photos or videos taken by WRI will include people participating in our actions and events. We do our best to ensure that anyone who would rather not be photographed or filmed is not included in the footage.

We occasionally take photos of our supporters taking parts in actions or events, or have these delivered to us by other participants in WRI-related activities where staff members are not present. We do our best to ensure that everyone in those photos and video have given their consent to be included.

What data does your website collect?

Cookies are small text files that your web browser places on your computer to record your browsing activity. The WRI website uses Matomo – an open source program for monitoring use of a website – that allows us to monitor, to a limited extent, where our website is being accessed from and how it is being used. The data collected on this program is anonymised and stored on a secure server, maintained by Netuxo, our web developers.

What if there’s a data security breach?

According to the Information Commissioner’s Office, personal data breaches occur:

  • when data is lost, destroyed, corrupted or disclosed;

  • if someone accesses the data or passes it on without proper authorisation;

  • or if data is made unavailable and this unavailability has a significant negative effect on individuals.

WRI complies with all relevant legislation in identifying and responding to personal data security breaches. This includes documenting all breaches, notifying the Information Commissioner’s Office of a breach within 72 hours of becoming aware of it, and notifying and advising affected individuals in compliance with relevant legislation.
