Small Actions Big Movements: the Continuum of Nonviolence - registration deadline extended!

Thank you to everyone who has registered for the 'Small Actions, Big Movements: The Continuum of Nonviolence' International Conference. We know that many of you did not manage to register in time but still would like to attend the conference, so we have extended the registration deadline to 31 May.

In the past emails we have shared with you the names of the speakers of the opening plenary:

• Jenni Williams (Women of Zimbabwe Arise),
  
• Sahar Vardi (American Friends Service Committee and New Profile, Israel),
  
• Omar Barghouti (Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, Palestine), 

and shared that before the conference there will be a Gender and Militarism Consultation hosted by the Women Peacemakers Program.

Our excitement about this conference also has a lot to do with diversity and range of people who will join us. By now we have confirmation that more than 50 people from more than 20 African countries will be attending. From people resisting the military in Egypt, peace-builders in South Sudan, gay and lesbians rights activists in Zimbabwe, there will be a rich diversity of activists from all over Africa.  There will also be a strong presence from other regions in the world, at the moment we know of people coming from East Timor, West Papua, South Korea, Nepal, India, Palestine, Israel, Turkey, Macedonia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Britain, US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Paraguay, Colombia and others. South African participation will also be strong, with representatives of several grassroots organisations and people who were strongly involved in the resistance to Apartheid, and continue to struggle for social justice now.

We are excited that, throughout the conference, there will be a variety of other activities taking place. There will be several exhibitions, including an exhibition especially curated for the conference on arpilleras as a form of nonviolent action and an exhibition on the history of the South African End Conscription Campaign.

We are also very much looking forward to the street installation made by artist Ralph Ziman, planned to coincide with the conference out side the Cape Town City Hall,  displaying a huge broken AK-47 - showing the connecting between war and economy - to be seen from the air.

These are just a few glimpses of what will happen in early July in Cape Town. You can't miss it!
