2019 saw big increase in military spending

The Pentagon has begun to put pressure on suppliers of components for weapons in Mexico, to reopen factories and restart exports to the US.

The Canadian government has reinstated arms sales to Saudi Arabia, renegotiating a multibillion-dollar contract for light armoured vehicles built by General Dynamics Land Systems.

The UN's special envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams, has described the country as “an experimental field for all kinds of new weapons systems”, as supporters of the warring parties violate the UN's arms embargo and continue to ship weapons into the country.

New data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shows that global military expenditure rose to $1917 billion in 2019, an increase of 3.6 per cent over 2018 and the largest annual growth in spending since 2010.
