Conflict Textiles exhibition: Nonviolence in Action: Antimilitarism in the 21st Century

Roberta Bacic - a previous WRI staff member who has developed the Conflict Textiles collection  https://cain.ulster.ac.uk/conflicttextiles/  has curated, with the assistance of Breege Doherty, an online exhibition of textiles (arpilleras, quilts and wall hangings) that will be hosted on the WRI website. Arpilleras (pronounced ‘ar-pee-air-ahs’) are appliquéd tapestries that originated in Chile and have since been used by women across the world to explore themes of war, conflict, nonviolence, and protest.

This exhibition Nonviolence in Action: Antimilitarism in the 21st Century marking the 100th anniversary of WRI is comprised of 28 pieces. These arpilleras, quilts and wall hangings bring us face to face with the courageous denouncement, resistance and nonviolent actions of many of us in various continents who, with our families and communities have experienced the human cost of war. The textile Centenary 2021 War Resisters' International/ Internacional de Resistentes a la Guerra has been specially commissioned to mark the centennial.
