The proponents of the regime – accomplices and actors of the wars of the 90’s – are oblivious of the fact that large numbers of men refused to be reduced to cannon fodder and that they will not accept that nowadays either for the sake of the regime’s militaristic motives!

On May 15, 2001, the Conscientious Objection Network submitted to the National Assembly of SR Yugoslavia a legislative initiative with over 30,000 signatures requesting the recognition of the right to conscientious objection.

The right to conscientious objection was recognized on August 27, 2003, owing to the campaign (2001-2003) of the civilian society, primarily of the Lawyers' Committee for Human Rights (Jukom) and Women in Black, with the massive support of civilian society organizations and citizens throughout Serbia. The first 300 conscientious objectors applied for civil service in September 2003 and since then the number of conscientious objectors has steadily increased.

Article 45 of the Serbian Constitution provides for the right to conscientious objection in such a way that "a person is not obliged, contrary to his religion or beliefs, to fulfil a military or other obligation involving the use of weapons."

STOP to campaigns for the reintroduction of mandatory military service! This year, War Resisters’ International, together with Connection e.V., has called for your video contributions for our online action. We received your videos celebrating this day, sharing your stories as conscientious objectors as well as your solidarity messages with conscientious objectors. We will make all these videos available on15th May, 2020, the International Day of Conscientious Objection on our YouTube channel Refuse to Kill.

"The contributions from all over the world are varied and colorful," said Igor Seke for War Resisters’ International, "And just as varied are the reasons why people from different countries make the decision to refuse war and military service, sometimes at great risk. To date, we have received contributions from Angola, Belgium, Cyprus, Eritrea, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States.”

Rudi Friedrich from the Germanny based Connection e.V. added: "This year, with the International Conscientious Objection Day, we particularly draw attention to those who have to leave their countries of origin due to forced recruitment and who are looking for protection in other countries. They are denied the human right of conscientious objection. But to flee from war and forced recruitment is generally not seen as a reason for asylum.”

This year, our campaign emphasises the protection of people who do not want to participate in war and refuse to be part of the military. Women and men who refuse compulsory recruitment to the military need protection!

To find more information follow us on Twitter and Facebook as well as on WRI and Connection e.V.'s websites, and join us on this day with your posts on social media with the hashtag #CODay2020.

Actions/events happening on International Conscientious Objection Day (to be updated)

In Colombia, a coalition of antimilitarist and CO organisations, including Cuerpo Con-siente, Justapaz, CONOVA, BDS-Colombia, ACOOC, among others, are holding a Virtual Antimilitarist Festival on May 15-16, from 9am to 5pm (Colombia time), you can join them on Justapaz's Facebook live.

Also, the Kolectivo Antimilitarista de Medellín and La tulpa are organising an online forum on education in nonviolence and antimilitarism on May 15 at 3pm (Colombia time) on Facebook Live of Escuela de Experiencias Vivas and here https://www.pluriversonarrativo.com/

European Bureau for Conscientious Objection (EBCO) is organising an online action, #Militarydistancing, and inviting all to share their peace messages on social media with the hashtags #MilitaryDistancing on 15th May.
