The Defence and Security Equipment International, or DSEI, opened on September 12th, but the exhibition centre where it is held was repeatedly blockaded during the week before it began, as activists took action to disrupt the preparations for the fair. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/sep/11/over-100-arrested-for-blocking-firms-setting-up-stands-at-london-arms-fair">Over a hundred people have been arrested</a>, amid <a href="https://twitter.com/SamWalton/status/906857857185972224">rumours that the setup of the fair was days behind schedule</a>. Source: Flickr/CAAT</figcaption> </figure> <p>It appears that the sheer scale of the resistance over the last week overwhelmed the police and organiders of the event, as did the creativity and determination of the myriad of groups who were involved in the protests. Each day was organized by different groups that make up the <a href="http://stopthearmsfair.org.uk/">Stop the Arms Fair</a> coalition to allow them to plan their own actions alongside like-minded people with similar concerns. The various themes included Palestine solidarity, No Faith in War, No to Nuclear and Arms to Renewables, and Solidarity Beyond Borders. There was also an Academic Conference at the Gates event, with a Festival of Resistance and War Stops Here seminar over the weekend.</p> <p>This approach allowed groups and campaigns that have not typically worked together to find common cause in resisting the fair. Those who wanted to focus on their specific action were able to do so, confident that just as much energy was going into the other days of resistance. It also allowed people new to the movement to find a group of people they feel comfortable taking action alongside. As new faces become involved in the campaign, a sense of “positive feedback” has grown, as the energy put into one action reflects back in the work of many others.</p> <p> </p> <p></p><figure role="group" class="embedded-entity align-center"> <div alt="A group of prieces give communion at the DSEI protests" data-embed-button="image_embed" data-entity-embed-display="image:responsive_image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="body_inline_full" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="e50f85a6-39af-4b97-81c9-f9ec9a9a6b22" data-langcode="en" title="A group of prieces give communion at the DSEI protests. There were also numerous cases of affinity groups working together effectively to put disruptive blockades in place. For instance, as a lock-on was finally removed from the road by a police cutting team during the blockade organized by faith groups, others rappelled from a nearby bridge to block another road.</p> <p> </p> <p><div class="embed-media embed-media--rich-twitter"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr" xml:lang="en" xml:lang="en">This Dalek knows the cops are not our friends... <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/stopdsei?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#stopdsei</a> Supervillains know their rights! <a href="https://t.co/eIhHYyCxFK">pic.twitter.com/eIhHYyCxFK</a></p>— Stop The Arms Fair! Over 1,500 companies take part, exhibiting weapons of war to over 30,000 people, including military delegations from countries with appalling human rights records and countries at war. Illegal equipment and weapons have regularly been found to be marketed at DSEI, including torture equipment and cluster munitions. It’s important to note, however, that those organising against DSEI do not simply want a clean, legal or sanitised arms fair - they want to stop the arms fair altogether. DSEI is organised by a private company called Clarion Events, with the full support of the British government, which extends official invites to military delegations around the world.</p> <p>Resisting arms fairs like DSEI is important, because they are one of the clearest, starkest manifestations of the arms trade; actual arms sellers marketing the equipment of war they build to militaries looking for the latest technology. Already this year, arms fairs in <a href="https://www.wri-irg.org/en/story/2017/homesec-2017">Spain</a>, <a href="https://www.wri-irg.org/en/story/2017/cansec-isdef-and-idet-arms-fairs-resisted">Canada, Israel and the Czech Republic</a> have faced direct action from local campaigners, with Seoul’s ADEX and Bogota’s ExpoDefensa due to take place in the coming months.</p> <p></p><figure role="group" class="embedded-entity align-center"> <div alt="International activists using a lock on tube to disrupt DSEI." data-embed-button="image_embed" data-entity-embed-display="image:responsive_image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="body_inline_full" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f29499a8-0be0-4b27-a876-b9bd60e4b534" data-langcode="en" title="International activists using a lock on tube to disrupt DSEI."> <img alt="International activists using a lock on tube to disrupt DSEI." class="img-responsive" src="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/koldobi_and_javier_lock_on_dsei.jpg?itok=jPiptcTN" srcset="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/koldobi_and_javier_lock_on_dsei.jpg?itok=jPiptcTN 1x" title="International activists using a lock on tube to disrupt DSEI." typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <figcaption>International activists using a lock on tube to disrupt DSEI. Source: CAAT/Flickr</figcaption> </figure> <p>The arms industry — like all industries — relies on a social license to operate, which means that as well as receiving formal legal backing it also needs the support of wider society. This social license allows the arms industry to wrap itself in a cloak of legitimacy, and resisting the arms trade wherever it manifests is one clear way to challenge this social license.</p> <p>At the moment, the arms industry assumes its activities are almost de facto legitimate, but that is in part because most people rarely, if ever, think about its existence or how it operates. Taking direct action against events like DSEI allow us to “point the finger” and draw attention to the wider arms trade, questioning it’s legitimacy, while also directly impeding its ability to function. A few weeks before the fair was due to begin the newly elected mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/dsei-2017-london-arms-fair-weapons-saudi-arabia-excel-centre-sadiq-khan-cancel-a7853286.html">said he wanted to see DSEI banned</a>, but didn’t have the power himself to stop it.</p> <p></p><figure role="group" class="embedded-entity align-center"> <div alt="A group of clowns mock police at DSEI protests." data-embed-button="image_embed" data-entity-embed-display="image:responsive_image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="body_inline_full" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="57274e53-cb88-44eb-9051-87f2da7d115f" data-langcode="en" title="A group of clowns mock police at DSEI protests."> <img alt="A group of clowns mock police at DSEI protests." class="img-responsive" src="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/clowns_at_dsei.jpg?itok=xPlRM3yY" srcset="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/clowns_at_dsei.jpg?itok=xPlRM3yY 1x" title="A group of clowns mock police at DSEI protests." typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <figcaption>A group of clowns mock police at DSEI protests. Source: CAAT/Flickr</figcaption> </figure> <p>Mega-events like DSEI can be relatively difficult to disrupt in a substantial way. That is one reason why the preparations for the arms fair were targeted, which is a relatively new strategy. The coalition also focused its energy on that stage in 2015, the last time the arms fair was held, and organizers <a href="https://wagingnonviolence.org/feature/court-victory-direct-action-shut-down-london-arms-fair-dsei/">saw the potential</a>. The event’s weakest link is the logistical complexity of setting it up in the first place, and the potential this offers to a campaign of direct action and civil disobedience is clear. The apparent impenetrability of such a complex and well-resourced industry suddenly looks a bit more shaky as activists put their bodies in the way, abseil from bridges, and use lock-ons to coordinate blockades of trucks carrying equipment.</p> <p>As arms dealers and representatives from militaries window shop for weapons over the next three days at DSEI, vigils and actions will likely continue, and throughout the week a radical art exhibit called <a href="https://artthearmsfair.com/">Art the Arms Fair</a> will take place close to the centre. There is a real sense among organisers that a strong, active movement is being built that will be able to continue to show effective resistance to DSEI in the years to come.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-information field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Author information</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--authors-and-bios paragraph--id--_9 paragraph--view-mode--bio-only"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Programmes &amp; Projects</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/programme/war-profiteers" hreflang="en">War Profiteers</a></span> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/465" hreflang="en">Front Page</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Countries</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/92" hreflang="en">United Kingdom</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Theme</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/444" hreflang="en">War starts here</a></span> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/63" hreflang="en">arms trade</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Companies</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/278" hreflang="en">Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI)</a></span> </div> <section class="comments"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=40879&amp;2=comment&amp;3=comment" token="gRmnQqHSbkqvIky1PlAjJBa_Xk60nKf56jyjUdkaoN4"></drupal-render-placeholder> <article data-comment-user-id="0" id="comment-40166" about="/en/comment/40166" typeof="schema:Comment" class="js-comment" data-comment-user-id="0" id="comment-40166" about="/en/comment/40166" typeof="schema:Comment" class="js-comment comments"> <mark class="hidden" data-comment-timestamp="1506696378"></mark> <div> <h3 property="schema:name" datatype=""><a href="/en/comment/40166#comment-40166" class="permalink" rel="bookmark" hreflang="en">Help needed now to stop &quot;DSEI&quot; Arms Fair in London 2019 </a></h3> <footer> <article typeof="schema:Person" about="/user/0"> </article> <p><span rel="schema:author">Submitted by <span lang="" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Gwyn (not verified)</span> on Sat, 23 Sep 2017 - 09:28</span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2017-09-23T08:28:46+00:00" class="hidden"></span> </p> <a href="/en/comment/40166#comment-40166" hreflang="en">Permalink</a> </footer> <div property="schema:text" class="field field--name-comment-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>The participation of WRI supporters from several countries in the protests before the Arms Fair at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in in East London in September 2017 was very welcome. Coalition of Women for Peace invited speakers from around the world to participate in a series of panel discussions with Palestinian and Israeli campaigners, drawing parallels between the experiences of those living in militarised communities such as the favelas of Brazil and the realities of the lives of Palestinians living under occupation. Sarah from WRI's staff team gave a presentation on resistance to the arming of Israel in the UK.</p> <p>The conference highlighted the way in which Israeli military industries influence and profit from the occupation and then sell on the 'knowledge' that they have gained in so doing, exporting occupation to the rest of the world. Fifty years on to the week from the 'Six Day War' which led to the ongoing Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, activists also took their protest against “blood money” directly to the war profiteers with a die-in at the arms fair and protest outside.</p> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Programmes &amp; Projects</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/programme/war-profiteers" hreflang="en">War Profiteers</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Countries</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/228" hreflang="en">Israel</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Theme</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/444" hreflang="en">War starts here</a></span> </div> <section class="comments"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=40790&amp;2=comment&amp;3=comment" token="2gW_48Po8OcDyQoCpEPT6K7Ds8xbGXg0jyKPhAbuUZI"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> </div> Wed, 05 Jul 2017 13:03:08 +0000 Andrew 40790 at https://wri-irg.org Thank you for your support, we reached our target! https://wri-irg.org/en/story/2017/thank-you-your-support-we-reached-our-target <div data-history-node-id="40771" class="node node--type-story node--view-mode-rss ds-1col clearfix"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/single_page_desktop/public/2017-05/placeholder_2.png?itok=iUwolPjp 1x" media="screen and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/single_page_mobiles_and_tablets/public/2017-05/placeholder_2.png?itok=bbvuIMn_ 1x" type="image/png"/> <img src="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/single_page_mobiles_and_tablets/public/2017-05/placeholder_2.png?itok=bbvuIMn_" alt="Image of the Handbook for Nonviolent Campaigns and a WRI tote bag" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> <div class="caption"></div> <time > 22 Jun 2017</time> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Thank you!</p> <p>We made it to our crowdfunding target, raising £2045 towards our campaign to make resistance to the DSEI London arms fair international. We have some perks, to say thank you for the support!</span></p> <ul style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px;"> <li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">For £10 we’ll send you a “thank you!” postcard</span></li> <li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">For £20 we’ll send you one of our beautiful “broken rifle” pin badges</span></li> <li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">For £40 we will send you a copy of our Handbook for Nonviolent Campaigns</span></li> <li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">For £75 we'll send a copy of our Handbook and a handprinted “War is a crime against humanity” tote bag</span></li> </ul> <p><div class="embed-media embed-media--video-vimeo"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/215868589?app_id=122963" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" title="War Stops Here"></iframe></div></p> <h1>Thank you!</h1> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Programmes &amp; Projects</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/programme/war-profiteers" hreflang="en">War Profiteers</a></span> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/programmes/wri-event" hreflang="en">WRI event</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Countries</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/92" hreflang="en">United Kingdom</a></span> </div> <div class="field--label tags--label field-label-above">Theme</div> <div class="wri-main--tags"> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/65" hreflang="en">Mercenaries</a></span> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/444" hreflang="en">War starts here</a></span> <span class="rel-tag" > <a href="/en/taxonomy/term/63" hreflang="en">arms trade</a></span> </div> <section class="comments"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=40690&amp;2=comment&amp;3=comment" token="odpEUjAiceXjlyhyKJMnK6mvP11fTL1ITPpj6KeFoPI"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> </div> Wed, 17 May 2017 13:05:28 +0000 HBrock 40690 at https://wri-irg.org WRI Council meeting: September 2017 https://wri-irg.org/en/story/2017/wri-council-meeting-september-2017 <div data-history-node-id="27188" class="node node--type-story node--view-mode-rss ds-1col clearfix"> <time > 05 Apr 2017</time> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"> <figure role="group" class="embedded-entity align-left"> <div data-embed-button="image_embed" data-entity-embed-display="image:responsive_image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="body_inline_full" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="9b13f3cc-7b1c-48e8-b767-282fd30754ce" data-langcode="en"> <img class="img-responsive" src="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/images/018%20DSEi%20trial%20-%20April%2015%2C%202016.home.jpg?itok=m-GnKZNG" srcset="/sites/default/files/public_files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/images/018%20DSEi%20trial%20-%20April%2015%2C%202016.home.jpg?itok=m-GnKZNG 1x" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <figcaption>Activists - including members of WRI - celebrate being found not guilty after actions against DSEI in 2015</figcaption> </figure> <p>WRI's Council meets once a year, to discuss the future work of the network.
