Announcement against terrorism and war threats

We join in the condemnation of terrorist attacks and we deplore most sincerely all the victims of the outrageous attacks on New York and Washington on 11th September 2001. At the same time, our sympathy is with the wounded and with the families and friends of the casualties in these attacks. It is our opinion that all the participants in this brutal act have to be brought to justice.

The Theatre of Good and Evil By Eduardo Galeano

In the struggle of Good against Evil, it's always the people who get killed.

The terrorists killed workers of 50 countries in NYC and DC, in the name of Good against Evil. And in the name of Good against Evil President Bush has promised vengeance: "We will eliminate Evil from the world", he announced.

[Phyllis and Orlando Rodriguez's son Greg is one of the Trade Center victims. They have asked that people share these letters this copy of letter sent to NY Times as widely as possible.]

Not in Our Son's Name

Our son Greg is among the many missing from the World Trade Center attack. Since we first heard the news, we have shared moments of grief, comfort, hope, despair, fond memories with his wife, the two families, our friends and neighbors, his loving colleagues at Cantor Fitzgerald / ESpeed, and all the grieving families that daily meet at the Pierre Hotel.

An eye for an eye?

Taking account of the limitations of words particularly at this time of shock, fear and mourning these are preliminary thoughts on the present crisis.

A time of prayer meditation and seeking the truth about what has happened are needed.

Those injured and the relatives of those who have been killed in the attacks on US institutions or cannot be found need healing in body, mind and spirit. We can offer empathy, prayer and practical assistance like blood donations and shelter for those stranded in the UK.

We are shocked at the level of terror of today's attacks in the USA. There are no words to describe the horror, or at least to understand what tragedies have happened in the buildings and the planes. We only know for sure that innocent people have been sacrificed to a barbarian calculation. And we only have helpless gestures as this one to express our grief and sympathy that we feel.

But we speak up also because we feel concern:

The chairs of the IFoR Multifaith Nonviolence Group (MNG), Abbas Baba, and the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FoR), Denis Beaumont, have written to President George W. Bush to assure him of the sympathy and prayers of the members of their two organisations for the people of the United States, and in particular for the victims and their families and friends following the terrorist attacks.

Statement by WRL staff and executive:
"As we write, Manhattan feels under seige, with all bridges, tunnels, and subways closed, and tens of thousands of people walking slowly north from Lower Manhattan. As we sit in our offices here at War Resisters League, our most immediate thoughts are of the hundreds, if not thousands, of New Yorkers who have lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center.

The day is clear, the sky is blue, but vast clouds billow over the ruins where so many have died, including a great many rescue workers who were there when the final collapse occured.
