RAMALC statement on the situation in Venezuela
The Executive Committee of War Resisters’ International endorses and shares the following statement by RAMALC regarding the situation in Venezuela.
The Latin American and Caribbean Antimilitarist Network (RAMALC), in light of the current situation in Venezuela, condemns the bombing of Venezuelan territory by the United States, which has also affected the civilian population.
Is bombing not the first step in a strategy that seeks to invade, extract the resources they want and establish the military bases they desire?
This was recently stated by the President of the United States.
We condemn this US military action, just as we have condemned every human rights violation by Nicolás Maduro's government. We reject violence and oppression, wherever they come from. We warn that this spiral of authoritarianism threatens Venezuelan sovereignty and the stability of the entire region; it is the historical continuation of a long list of military interventions by that state, always guided by geostrategic interests.
We have also rejected the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, denounced by those who support an antimilitarist struggle for Venezuela, but our anti-dictatorial struggle does not justify imperial invasion of Latin American territories.
No bombing can be justified. Wars only deepen poverty and exacerbate existing violence.
If this aggression is not widely condemned internationally and this behaviour is not stopped, then there will no longer be any international order, except for the law of the strongest.
How can we build an anti-imperialist anti-militarism that shows solidarity with those who suffer and those who long for change in Venezuela?
Our response is to call on the solidarity of the Latin American peoples to place the care of life at the centre of international geopolitics, to prioritise the dignity of peoples and communities above any multilateral agenda.
We condemn the military action of the United States and any attempt at invasion. Above all, we stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people, both within and beyond their borders.
NOTHING JUSTIFIES MILITARISM
