War In Yemen, Made in Europe

A new report published by one of WRI's affiliates in Belgium – Vredesactie – expolores the full extent of European arms exports to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. The report is called War In Yemen, Made in Europe, and argues "Military materiel from European origin is a key enabler for the warfighting capacity of Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as for some of the contributions of other participating states."

The report identifies a wide range of different types of weapons and military equipment supplied to the air forces of members of the Saudi-led coalition by European countries, including:

• Eurofigther Typhoon aircraft, consortium formed by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo and is managed through the joint company Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH.
• Mirage 2000-9 aircraft, flown by the UAE and built by the French company Dassault Aviation.
• A330 MRTT tanker aircraft, flown by Saudi Arabia and UAE and built by Airbus.
• A wide range of missiles, including Mk81, Mk82, MK83 and Mk84 bombs made by RWM Italy and sold to Saudi Arabia and UAE; Paveway guidance systems built by Raytheon; and Storm Shadow and Brimstone cruise missiles built by MBDA.

The report also explores where the naval vessels and systems used by the coalition were built – most of the ships used by the UAE's Navy were built in Europe, and all of Saudi Arabia's were built in Europe or the USA. Saudi Arabia also has a number of ships on order, including five corvettes (a type of small warship) being built by Spanish company Navantia.

Equipment of European origin being used in the Saudi/UAE-led land war include French Leclerc tanks built by Nexter, using ammunition built by the same company. Patria AMV 8x8 armoured personnel carriers made by Finnish company Patria, and built by its subsidiary Rosomak in Poland have also been spotted in Yemen.
