Hold Down Cluster Bombs!

South Korea produces, stockpiles, imports, and exports cluster munitions. The South Korean government has not joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions. South Korean companies Hanwha and Poongsan joined the Red Flag List of the Cluster Munitions Coalition, which is the list of 7 cluster munition producers, they are in this list together with Alliant TechSystems (US), L-3 Communications (US), Lockheed Martin (US), Singapore Technologies Engineering (Singapore), and Textron (US). Because their involvement in cluster bombs, the Norwegian Pension Fund and the ABP (Dutch) excluded Hanwha and Poonsang from their portfolios in 2005 and 2007. Lots of Korean financial institutions including South Korean National Pension Service, on the other hand, do not think twice about investing in Hanwha and Poongsan.

The action by the Weapon Zero Team was in commemoration of the second anniversary of the Convention on Cluster Munitions becoming international law. We wore cluster bombs, walked around the Seoul City Hall, and talked to people. Others handed out leaflets(in the shape of a cluster bomb) and sold the book 'Forbid Cluster Bombs, the Rain of Death' that we published in Korean earlier this year. Many Koreans know little or nothing about the Convention and Korea's involvement in this issue, so now we're focusing on increasing public awareness on cluster bombs.
