The armed forces are made up of the gendarmerie and the Corpi Militari Voluntar, a voluntary military force performing ceremonial duties and limited police assistance.

Legislation allows for conscription during wartime or time of emergency, during which all citizens between the ages of 16 and 60 are liable.
