We are very pleased to announce that War Resisters' International has hired Javier Garate from Santiago, Chile as staff for our new Nonviolence Programme.

Javier, who is active with Ni Casco Ni Uniforme (Neither Helmet nor Uniform), a WRI Section, brings a variety of experiences that will help him in his new work. Some of you may have met Javier when he attended the International Conscientious Objectors' Day training and activities in Israel in 2003. He was also one of the host organisers for May 15th in Chile in 2004.

On Wednesday, 4 August 2004, the Inland Revenue will come to the WRI Office to collect outstanding war taxes of War Resisters' International for the financial year 2003. The Inland Revenue informed War Resisters' International that one of their tax collectors will call at the WRI office after 1pm, to take the taxes, which WRI refused to pay on behalf of its employees, which now total £454.55.

Dear xxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for your letter dated 19 July. We appreciate that you actually refer to our arguments, and are happy to start a discussion about the issue.

The interpretation of human rights is constantly changing, and nowadays there are no doubts any more that conscientious objection to military service is a human right, derived from Art.

Unbelievable but true: Howard will be leaving the WRI staff next September after many years in the office -- we won't tell you how many years, as it might hurt his feelings! Having recently been awarded a fellowship by the Einstein Institute in the US, he will be doing research on the nonviolent movement in Kosov@. In the meanwhile we are looking for a new staff person to take on programme and finance work in the London office. You have already received our job advert in a separate mailing last month.
