I am very concerned about the imprisonment of conscientious objector Halil Savda on 24 February 2012 under article 318 of the Turkish Penal Code for a statement in solidarity from August 2006 for two then imprisoned Israeli conscientious objectors.

Article 318 of the Turkish Penal Code represents an unfair limitation of the right to freedom of expression in Turkey, and is considered to be in direct breach of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protect the right to freedom of expression and to which Turkey is a state party.

I therefore urge you to urgently repeal Article 318, and to halt of prosecutions based on Article 318. I also urge you to grant an amnesty to all those who have been convicted under Article 318, such as Halil Savda. I urge you to immediately release Halil Savda.

I urge you to respect human rights.
