ISRAEL: More court-martials of conscientios objectors, and repeated imprisonment

A third conscientious objector is now facing a court-martial in Israel. Other conscientious objectors still get repeatedly sentenced to imprisonment by the Israeli military.

Dror Boimel (12373), who was sentenced to a seventh prison term on 20 February, and who is also facing a court-martial, was temporarily released on 23 February. The legal team of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), which is defending Dror Boimel, succeeded to get for him a new hearing by the 'Conscience Committee', which rejected his claim to be a pacifist last year. As there is no legal right to conscientious objection in Israel, chances to get exempted are low.

Uri Ya'acobi (ISR12376) is facing a first hearing of his court-martial at Jaffa Military Court today. He spent already seven prison terms in Military Prison - a total of more than 138 days. Adam Maor (ISR12843) received a third prison term on 23 February. He was first imprisoned on 10 December 2002, and spent most of the time in prison since. WRI assumes that he is again imprisoned in Military Prison No 4.
