Dear Mr Vartan Oskanian, Minister for Foreign Affairs

I am very concerned about the treatment of conscientious objectors Arman Agazaryan, Sergei Hovhanissyan, Gevork Manukyan, Arsen Gasparyan, and Ashot Torgomyan by the Armenian authorities.
All five have been sentenced in March 2005 for refusing to perform military service. This is in violation of Armenia's commitment to the Council of Europe to recognise the right to conscientious objection.
Although Armenia now has passed a law on conscientious objection, and some conscientious objectors have been recognised, the treatment of the five conscientious objectors mentioned above is a violation of Armenia's commitment to the Council of Europe, and a violation of their human right to conscientious objection.
I therefore urge you to recognise the right to conscientious objection also in practive, and to immediately release all imprisoned conscientious objectors.. I urge you to respect human rights.
