Dear Mr Shaul Mofaz, Minister of Defence
I am very concerned about the imprisonment of conscientious objectors in Israel. Again a conscientious objector who refuses to serve in the Occupied Territories has been sent to prison, in violation of his human right to conscientious objection. I urge you to release Natanel Alsace, sentenced to 21 days on 11 September, immediately.
I am also very concerned about the court-martials of conscientious objectors Jonathan Ben-Artzi, Noam Bahat, Haggai Matar, Shimri Tsamaret, Adam Maor, Matan Kaminer, and Hillel Goral.
All of them are being court-martialed because they refuse to bear arms, because they insist on their right to conscientious objection, as enshrined in Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Their imprisonment and court-martial is a violation of human rights.
I'm especially concerned about repeated imprisonment of some conscientious objectors - in some cases more than 6 times. I want to draw your attention to the opinion of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which stated in 1999 that repeated imrprisonment of conscientious objectors is arbitrary, being contrary to article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
I therefore urge you to immediately release all imprisoned conscientious objectors. I urge you to respect human rights.
