WRI Programmes

War Resisters' International is a network, and an organisation. The WRI network carries out its own activities, and the WRI office supports the network wherever wanted and possible. The WRI office also carries out its own programmes, based on decisions taken by the WRI network at Council meetings and Triennial conferences.

Other activities

The overarching aim of the Nonviolence Programme is to strengthen and deepen our understanding of nonviolence, nonviolent strategies, and nonviolent campaigning, and to develop and provide tools and support to groups using nonviolence. It builds on the former Nonviolence and Social Empowerment programme: "Social Empowerment is a process in which people find back to their own power, the power to shape their own lives and to influence the course of events around them. They start to practice this power against oppression and exclusion, for participation, peace and human rights."

War Resisters' International's work in support of conscientious objectors

Conscientious objection

Conscientious objection has always been at the very centre of WRI's policy. WRI's declaration not to support any kind of war is a call to refuse to serve in any military or armed forces, a call to conscientious objection.

War Resisters' International supports all conscientious objectors, whether they are willing to perform a substitute service (in countries where this option exists) or not. War Resisters' International does not judge a person's motives to refuse to kill, and values a person's individual decision not to take part in war and preparation for war as an important step to end wars.

War Resisters' International's programme The Right to Refuse to Kill combines a wide range of activities to support conscientious objectors individually, as well as organised groups and movements for conscientious objection.

Globalising Nonviolence

The War Resisters' International Triennial Conference Globalising Nonviolence took place in Germany from 23-27 July 2006. It is expected that the existing Triennial wiki pages will become inactive, but users are encouraged to start new wiki pages for evaluations of the conference, workshop reports, and so forth.
