ISRAEL: Conscientious objector Yair Halper sentenced to another term of imprisonment

War Resisters' International learned today that Israeli conscientious objector Yair Halper was sentenced to further 28 days of imprisonment, after being released on 11 November. Yair Halper was first imprisoned on 17 October 2001 for refusing to enlist in the army and refusing to wear the uniform. He was then sentenced to 28 days imprisonment, which he spent in Military Prison No 4, and later in Military Prison No 6.

The second imprisonment of CO Yair Halper is seen by War Resisters' International as a form of arbitary detention, as he is imprisoned and punished twice for the same "crime": refusing to be trained to kill, and to wear a uniform.

War Resisters' International strongly condemns his second imprisonment, and calls on the Israeli authorities to immediately release CO Yair Halper and all other imprisoned COs.
