ISRAEL: New refuseniks jailed, conscientious objector Igal Rosenberg arrested for the fourth time
Conscientious objector Igal Rosenberg (ISR11885), a draft resister and one of the signatories of the "letter of the 12-graders" has been sentenced to 14 days in prison yesterday (29 April 2002). This is his fourth prison term in a row. He is due to be released on 10 May 2002. Igal Rosenberg objects to any sort of service in the Israeli army. New Profile writes: "This is the first time in a long period that the army sends an objector to prison in the fourth time in a row. It is not yet clear to us whether this signals a general change of policy on the part of the army. The official charge against Ig'al Rosenberg this time was that of going AWOL (he did not return to the Induction Base immediately after being released from prison and stayed at home for several days instead). It is possible that in this case he was sent to prison an extra time for procedural reasons."
Rafram Haddad (ISR12059), an art student and journalist from Jerusalem, was sentenced to 28 days in prison yesterday, after refusing to serve in reserves as a guard in the Megiddo Military Prison, where Palestinians are held for long periods of time without trial. He is due out of prison on 24 May 2002.
A.L. (ISR12060 - wishes to remain anonymous) was sentenced to 35 days in military prison yesterday. He is due out on 30 May 2002.
Amir Shachal (ISR12061), a reserves officer objecting to service in the Occupied Territories, was sentenced to 21 days in prison on 25 April. He is due out on 13 May 2002.
Doron Schinmein (ISR12062) was sentenced to 21 days in prison on 25 April for refusal to serve in the Occupied Territories. He is due out on 13 May 2002.
Ohad Shem-Tov (ISR12063), a 37-year-old hi-tech project manager, was sentenced to 21 days in prison on 24 April, because he refused to take part in enforcing closure on the Palestinian city of Nablus. He is due out on 12 May 2002.
S.U. (ISR12064 - wishes to remain anonymous), aged 35, was sentenced to 21 days in prison on 24 April for refusal to serve in the Occupied Territories. He is due out on 12 May 2002.
Tomer Livneh (ISR12065), a pacifist, was sentenced to 28 days in prison on 23 April after he refused to report to reserve duty. Tomer Livneh is due to be released from prison on 17 May 2002.
Eyal Fischer (ISR12066) was sentenced to 28 days in prison on 18 April, but for some reason slipped through our list. He refuses to serve in the Occupied Territories and is due out of prison on 13 May 2002.
