ISRAEL: Four conscientious objectors imprisoned
During the last couple of days, four new conscientious objectors have been imprisoned for their refusal to serve in the Israeli army altogether or specifically in the Occupied Territories. According to the information War Resisters' International received from New Profile and other organisations in Israel, the number of conscientious objectors imprisoned in Israel reaches a peak of 10 now.
Ilan Windholz (ISR11973), aged 18, was sentenced on 24 March to 28 days in prison for refusing to serve in the Israeli army. Ilan Windholz was only transferred to Military Prison No 4 yesterday, after being held in detention for two days.
David Perlman (ISR11974) was sentenced on 24 March to 14 days in prison, for refusing to serve in the Occupied Territories. David Perlman is among the signatories of the Courage to Refuse declaration (letter of the officers - www.seruv.org.il), and is well known as an activist in environmental groups and a member of a community theatre. He is imprisoned in Military Prison No 4.
Piki Ben-Shalom (ISR11975) was sentenced to 28 days imprisonment for refusing to serve in the Occupied Territories. He too is a signatory of the Courage to Refuse declaration. He is imprisoned in Military Prison No 6.
Shachar Tzur (ISR11976), aged 30, was also sentenced to 28 days in prison. Tzur is married, a resident of Haifa and a student of architecture at the Technion. He too is a signatory of the Courage to Refuse declaration.
War Resisters' International calls for letters of support to these newly imprisoned conscientious objectors.
