ISRAEL: Refusenik sentenced to 14 days in prison

Yesterday, on 17 January 2002, Sharon Karpol, 29, from Kibutz Dalia, was sentenced to 14 days in military prison no 6 for not reporting to his reserve unit two days earlier. He had notified his unit in advance about his move. Sharon Karpol served in a combat unit as a conscript. He currently opposes most forms of service in the IDF because of its policy in the Occupied Territories. Sharon Karpol is willing to do only rescue and humanitarian aid work as a reservist, and definitely refuses to bear arms or serve in the Occupied Territories. One of the reasons for his decision not to report was an urgent duty in his position as coordinator of Amnesty International's Burma group in Israel. Sharon Karpol stated that at this time acting for human rights in Israel and all over the world has a higher priority for him than reserve service.
