Job Description for
Nonviolence Programme Worker
2 year contract, with the option to extend if funding can be secured.
Full time, probational period: 6 months
WRI, a network of pacifist organisations and individuals around the world, is looking for a third staff-person for its "Nonviolence" programme. The main task will be to develop this programme into a second fundable programme area, to complement the already existing "Right to refuse to Kill" programme area.
All WRI staff must subscribe to the WRI declaration:
"War is a crime against humanity. I am therefore determined not to support any kind of war and to strive for the removal of all causes of war."
JOB DESCRIPTION
It is the responsibility of the Nonviolence Programme Worker to develop this new programme, working with other staff, the Executive Committee and the WRI Network. Fundraising will be an integrated part of the programme development.
Programme
- Develop and distribute resources on nonviolence and nonviolent strategies for use by the WRI network and the wider movement. Such resources include a handbook for nonviolent action, collection of case studies of nonviolent campaigns, nonviolence training and campaign development materials.
- Network with groups interested in using nonviolence for social change, coordinating workshops at gatherings such as Social Forums, making WRI's resources available to grassroots activists doing anti-militarist and globalisation from below work.
- Develop resources for WRI's war profiteering campaign. Network with WRI affiliates working on such campaigns, supporting and coordinating nonviolent campaigns against war profiteers.
Fundraising
- Develop fundraising strategy for nonviolence programme work, as part of an overall fundraising strategy.
- In liaison with other staff and Executive members: implement fundraising strategy, which includes grantwriting and communicating with possible funders of the Nonviolence Programme. Find new sources of income including additional foundations.
- Along with other staff: Plan and implement fundraising for WRI events that include Nonviolence Programme work, such as Seminars and Triennial Conferences.
Joint responsibilities
- Joint responsibilities with other WRI staff members: Organising for WRI events, participating in meetings, assisting with production and distribution of minutes; Representing WRI at international meetings as agreed by the Executive; Production of WRI's publication The Broken Rifle; Organisation and maintenance of the office.
WORKING SKILLS
We are looking for a hardworking person with
- Commitment to and knowledge of nonviolent methods of social and political change
- Skills in campaign development
- Fundraising skills
- Experience with training in nonviolence, or willing to learn
- Good language skills, preferably English and Spanish
- Good communications skills, writing and speaking
- Willingness to travel
- Ability to work in a team and take on initiatives independently
- Ability to manage a high workload and to balance work and private life.
- Basic computer skills, ability to get accustomed to new software easily. Familiarity with word processing and desktop publishing software welcome.
Additional information
The present salary is £18,862 per anno, with a cost of living increase at the beginning of the year. WRI staff are entitled to 25 days of holidays, and a 1 month paid sabbatical after 5 years. WRI does not operate a pension scheme.
The WRI office is staffed by 3 persons (including the Nonviolence Programme Worker), 2 full-time and 1 part-time positions. WRI staff work closely with Peace News staff in the same building, as with other peace organisations based at 5 Caledonian Rd.

The continuation of the position after the initial two years is depending on finding funds for financing this position. Ability of getting work permit to work in London is a presupposition.
