The Right to Refuse to Kill: a War Resisters' International project
Project index page
A Conscientious Objector's Guide to the UN Human Rights System has the answers. It is the first and only handbook for COs and their supporters to set out UN processes and international law in one easy-to-use report. It guides the reader step by step through the necessary preparation and relevant procedures, and includes texts of relevant resolutions, recommendations, articles and human rights covenants.
A Conscientious Objector's Guide to the UN Human Rights System is a tool for change. It assists the individual CO to draw attention to his or her situation, at a time when many face imprisonment, punitive alternative service or forced recruitment. It also assists campaigners and human rights lobbyists concerned about military recruitment practices in their country to bring evidence before the UN, at a time when far too little data is submitted and too little profile is given to this issue. It will be especially welcome for groups working on asylum cases.
Researched under the auspices of the Quaker United Nations Office, this handbook is the second publication from CONCODOC (Conscription and Conscientious Objection Documentation), a project set up by the War Resisters' International. It complements the 1998 CONCODOC report Refusing to Bear Arms, a collection of 177 country reports detailing current legislation, penalties and practice in conscription, conscientious objection, desertion and draft evasion.
